A five-episode mini-podcast series exploring the Indigenous and Métis men from Edmonton and area who served in the 49th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, during the First World War.
Drawing on records held by the City of Edmonton Archives, the Loyal Edmonton Regiment Military Museum, and Library and Archives Canada, the series follows seven men from Edmonton and area, from the Indigenous landscape of amiskwacîwâskahikan before 1914, through their reasons for enlisting, their service overseas, and what awaited them at home, to how their service is remembered today. It is grounded in documentary evidence, and it names the colonial policies and archival silences that shaped both the men’s lives and the records they left behind.
